Body Surface Area (BSA) Calculator
Calculate your body surface area using three validated clinical formulas — Mosteller, DuBois & DuBois, and Haycock. Used in medical dosing, chemotherapy, and clinical assessments.
What is Body Surface Area?
Body Surface Area (BSA) is the total area of the outer surface of the human body, measured in square metres (m²). It has significant applications in clinical medicine, where many drug doses — particularly chemotherapy agents — are calculated per m² of BSA rather than per kilogram of body weight. This accounts for the variation in organ size and metabolic function between individuals more accurately than weight alone.
The three most clinically used formulas are the **Mosteller formula** (1987): BSA = √(height × weight / 3600) — widely adopted for its simplicity and accuracy. The **DuBois & DuBois formula** (1916): BSA = 0.007184 × height^0.725 × weight^0.425 — the original and historically most cited formula. The **Haycock formula** (1978): BSA = 0.024265 × height^0.3964 × weight^0.5378 — particularly accurate for children and adults alike.
The normal BSA range for adults is approximately 1.7–2.0 m². The average man has a BSA of around 1.9 m² and the average woman around 1.6 m².
