How Running Pace is Calculated

Running pace is the amount of time it takes to cover one unit of distance — typically expressed in minutes per kilometre (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mile). It is the inverse of speed.

This calculator takes your total distance and finish time, then divides time by distance to give your pace. For example, running 10 km in 50 minutes gives a pace of 5:00 per km (300 seconds ÷ 10 km).

The race projection feature applies your current pace to standard race distances — 1K, 5K, 10K, half marathon (21.0975 km), and marathon (42.195 km). This assumes you maintain a consistent effort across the full distance, which is useful for planning race strategy.

Note that race projections are theoretical — most runners slow slightly over longer distances due to fatigue. The projections are best used as a planning guide, not a guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Running pace is the time it takes to cover one kilometre or one mile. It is expressed as minutes:seconds — for example, 5:30 per km means each kilometre takes 5 minutes and 30 seconds. Pace is the inverse of speed: a faster runner has a lower pace number.
