How Steps Are Converted to Calories

Walking burns calories through mechanical work — moving your body weight over a distance. The number of calories burned depends on three main factors: how far you walk (determined by step count and stride length), how much you weigh, and how fast you walk (intensity).

This calculator uses the **MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task)** method, which is the gold standard for estimating exercise energy expenditure. MET values for walking are: 2.5 for slow walking, 3.5 for moderate pace, and 4.3 for brisk walking. The formula is: Calories = MET × body weight (kg) × time (hours).

Stride length is estimated as height × 0.413, which is the validated average ratio based on biomechanical research. Distance is then calculated as steps × stride length.

The 10,000 steps per day target became popular after a Japanese marketing campaign in the 1960s, but research has since supported it as a reasonable activity target. Studies show health benefits continue beyond 10,000 steps, with each additional 1,000 steps associated with reduced mortality risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

10,000 steps burns approximately 300–500 calories for most adults, depending on body weight, height, and walking pace. A heavier person burns more calories per step. At a moderate pace, a 70 kg person burns roughly 350–400 calories from 10,000 steps. Use this calculator for a personalised estimate based on your measurements.
